Mr. Washburn’s practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, tax litigation, commercial litigation, and social media issues. He is a former Federal Prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice.
In his defense practice, Mr. Washburn has represented individuals, major corporations, small businesses, non-profits, and churches. He has handled civil regulatory matters brought by federal agencies (including the SEC, FTC, FDA, and USDA) regulatory matters brought by state regulators and state and federal criminal investigations of all types. His is an expert in criminal tax, securities regulation, and consumer protection matters.
Mr. Washburn also has a robust practice representing victims. He has been the lead lawyer representing classes asserting securities fraud claims as well as civil rights violations. His expertise has been recognized by Courts as he was appointed lead class counsel by multiple federal judges.
In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Washburn has an active practice in the social media space. He in a principal in one of the leading social media management companies in the United States, focusing on paywall social media website management and brand growth and development. In his social media practice, he represents individuals and businesses in the areas of First Amendment, defamation, reputation management and protection, social media account restoration as well as negotiating endorsements and other brand deals.
Prior to joining Parkinson Benson Potter, Mr. Washburn was a Partner at multiple firms in Salt Lake City where, along with his white-collar practice, he represented corporations and individuals in a wide range of civil matters, including breach of contract claims, partnership disputes, securities fraud and federal qui tam actions under the False Claims Act. Mr. Washburn is licensed in California, Nevada, Utah, and Massachusetts and has handled matters in other jurisdictions including New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, and Washington, DC among other states. Additionally, he has handled litigation before the Tax Court and SEC Administrative matters overseen by Administrative Law Judges and has represented clients in multiple FINRA arbitrations. Over the course of his career, Mr. Washburn has been recognized by his peers in the legal industry multiple times as a Super Lawyer and has served as an adjunct professor of law at Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School and taught classes on Trial Advocacy, the Federal Rules of Evidence, and Tax at the Department of Justice’s National Advocacy Center. Loren graduated cum lude from Havard Law School in 2002 and clerked for Judge Stephen A. Anderson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
When he’s not practicing law, Mr. Washburn enjoys skiing, mountain biking, spending time with his wife and five kids, and suffering through yet another season of futility by Tottenham Hotspur.
